“The Gift of a Gift” – A Video Story About Networking

Some profound advice…

Once upon a time, many years ago—when I was much younger and, believe it or not, far better looking than I am now, I was offered some advice from a very fancy New York attorney. He told me the advice he would be offering me would be the best networking advice I’d ever received. “Yeah,” I thought…

It turned out that his advice was indeed terrific. And, remarkably, it was advice that, more than 30 years later, has really stood the test of time.

Networking: The Gift Of A Gift…

I smiled as I thought about my first book of short stories for The-Gift-Tree. Why not start, I thought, with a story about networking and the gift of a gift? And that’s what made me smile! Indeed, why not?

Once upon a time…

T’was on a wintry New York afternoon almost 30 years ago. That was when I received the networking advice that would open so many doors for me. This advice would later help me realize some of my dreams. This was the advice I now want to share…

Not only did it also help me launch my first law firm, it would later give birth to this program. Did I then have any idea the difference this would make in my life? No, I had no idea. And I still don’t…

A Dancer’s Tale…

When Gillian Lynne was asked how she became a dancer, a charming and quite delightful tale emerged. Indeed, her answer entranced me. This is her tale.

I also saw the tale as offering yet another example of the ever-present need to challenge conventional wisdom. I saw it as a wonderful example of how challenging conventional wisdom can sometimes help us bring dreams to life…

Our Extraordinary Capacity For Self-Delusion…

Leaders and followers beware…

My story today falls into the “I-couldn’t-possibly-have-made-this-up” category…

This is a story about self-delusion. It is about two sides of the coin I’m offering you. On the one side of the coin, we have leaders. On the other side, we have their followers—

  • The leaders want to believe the nonsense they might be sprouting—not because its true, but rather because they’d like it to be true. Their challenge is to find someone with the courage to constructively challenge what they are saying…
  • The followers want to believe their leaders so badly that, in the face of the hubris and self-importance of their leaders, they’re happy and eager to suspend their own common sense and natural curiosity. Their choice is between their self-interest in not challenging their leaders and potentially setting back their careers, on the one hand, and acting as a team member to protect their leaders, on the other,

The question, therefore, is what we can do to protect ourselves from falling into the trap created by the leaders’  hubris and their followers’ passivity?

Flying and business transitions…

Every summer, I try to make a trip across the pond. Last month, I was fortunate to return to Switzerland and hike the Engadine Valley. I love to travel, although I have to admit there are three stages of flying that I am not particularly fond of — take-offs, turbulence, and landings.

Over the years, I’ve likened these three stages of flying to transitions within an organization. For example—

  • Taking off is the stage when a newcomer to the organization comes on board to lead a team—or when a new product is introduced.
  • Turbulence represents the rockiness an organization experiences that comes with transitions and change, like the first 90 days.
  • Landing represents a moment of truth when the organization has to face whether or not it has any staying power—or whether another change may be needed.

“Hey, You Talking To ME?” — A Negotiating Test And An Ethics Lesson…

A prologue to this story…

The story I’m telling here is a sequel to a story I told a few weeks ago. I called that story: “Hey, I’m talking to YOU!”… It was about a difficult ethical choice a client had to make.

What has always intrigued me about that story was how the client used the choice he made. He used it to make an unspoken statement about ethics—a statement about what he expected of them.

The gift of that story was about choices. It was also about unspoken statements…

Now, the same factual backdrop offers me the opportunity to tell another story that will offer others gifts—gifts that I’ve found invaluable to this very day…

“Hey, I’m Talking To YOU!” — Choice And An Unspoken Communication About Ethics…

A prologue to my story…

About twenty years ago, a client had a difficult choice to make. This story is about leadership and ethics…

It is about how he made that choice and how, in the process, he won the trust of his team—a group of quite prestigious companies from all around the world…

That he had won them over with an unspoken communication fascinated me—and I suspect it might fascinate you too. At least, I hope so!

I was intrigued how the gift of this story extends beyond the leaders of the business world and beyond those who are responsible for creating an ethical culture in their business and professional lives. It extends to every part of our personal lives too…

While you may not ultimately agree with the particular choice my client made in this story, this doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you can sometimes communicate quite effectively with people without yelling this at them:

“Hey, I’m talking to YOU!”

Anyway, let’s get going…
